Shopify integration: connecting Shopify

Shopify is connected through the GraphQL Admin API. The older REST Admin API has been considered legacy since October 2024. Shopify reports changes by webhook, and large amounts of data are read through bulk operations. Ready-made apps exist for many targets. A custom integration pays off when accounting or ERP demands more logic than an app can map.

What Shopify is and who uses it

Shopify is a hosted shop system: the provider runs the software, and merchants set up their shop in the browser. That reduces the effort for servers and updates. For integrations it means: access is possible only through the official APIs, not through the database.

Which interfaces Shopify offers

ComponentWhat applies according to the Shopify documentation
GraphQL Admin APIMain interface for orders, products, customers and stock. Since 1 April 2025, new public apps must use GraphQL exclusively.
REST Admin APIClassified as legacy since 1 October 2024.
AuthenticationAccess token in the header X-Shopify-Access-Token; apps request individual permissions (scopes) on installation.
Rate limitsCalculated query costs in points following the leaky bucket principle, depending on the plan. A single query may cost at most 1,000 points.
Bulk operationsRecommended for large read operations instead of sending many single queries.
WebhooksDelivery to HTTPS, Google Pub/Sub or Amazon EventBridge; verification through HMAC in the header X-Shopify-Hmac-Sha256.

Important for operation: Shopify itself states that webhook delivery is not always guaranteed and that no order applies. Shopify therefore recommends additional reconciliation runs that regularly fetch changed data through the API.

Typical connections and data objects

  1. Order is handed over with taxes, shipping and discounts by webhook
  2. Refund is handed over as a credit note by webhook
  3. Payout and fees are handed over for payment reconciliation daily
  4. Stock is reconciled with the inventory management system every 15 minutes
  5. Customer is created as a debtor account on receipt

Common targets are accounting, such as Shopify with DATEV or Shopify with Lexware Office, and inventory management. For Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central there is a Shopify connector from Microsoft itself. The intervals above are examples.

Where standard apps reach their limits

  • Payment reconciliation

Order, payout and fee happen at different times. Without your own matching, open items stay open in accounting.

  • Lost events

Because webhooks are not guaranteed to arrive, a reliable integration needs a reconciliation run. Not every app has one.

  • B2B data

According to the help center, Shopify B2B with company customers and catalogs is available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. Company structures and payment terms have to fit the ERP.

  • Multiple channels

Shop, POS and marketplaces create orders with different attributes that should be posted separately.

How we connect Shopify

We build a dedicated app for your shop with exactly the permissions the connection needs. New orders and refunds arrive by webhook, we verify the signature and process each event only once. A nightly reconciliation picks up what was missed. We plan queries by point cost so the limit does not kick in. More on the process under shop-ERP integration.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still connect Shopify through the REST API?

Existing integrations keep working, but Shopify has classified the REST Admin API as legacy since October 2024. We build new integrations on the GraphQL Admin API.

Is an app from the Shopify App Store enough?

Often yes, if your workflow follows the standard. If fees, refunds or several sales channels have to be separated cleanly, an app reaches its limits sooner.

Who owns the code of the Shopify integration?

You do. You receive the source code and can run the integration yourself or book operation with us as a subscription that you can cancel monthly.

How quickly is a Shopify integration done?

Implementation usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. You receive the fixed-price quote within 3 business days after the free integration check.

  2. Shopware and DATEV. We retype every invoice by hand.
  3. We connect them directly: invoices, credit notes and payments go to DATEV automatically as a Buchungsstapel (DATEV posting batch).
  4. What does it cost?
  5. After a 30-minute check, you get a fixed price within three working days. The code is yours.
